Abstract
Introduction: Dry eye is the most common cause of ocular discomfort in thyroid diseases. Underlying mechanisms behind that are mechanical impairment of orbital muscles and immune mediated lacrimal gland dysfunction
Aim:To find out prevalence of dry eye in patients with thyroid disorder.
Methods: A prospective observational cross-sectional study conducted over a period of 2 years in 100 thyroid disorder patients.History taking, ocular surface staining, TBUT, schirmer’s test I and OSDI questionnaire was done to score dry eye symptoms. Patients were labelled as dry eye if minimum two out of four tests were positive.
Results:Patients ranged in age from 24 to 62 years(69% female, 31% male).The prevalence of dry eye was 63%. Hyperthyroid (52%), Hypothyroid (31%) & Euthyroid 17%. OSDI was found abnormal in 38%,TBUT in 62%,schirmer’s test in 23% & ocular surface staining in 48%.
Conclusion Proper clinical evaluation of dry eye will help early detection and prevent further complications.
