Abstract
Study design: Cross sectional
Purpose: To study the conjunctival flora in diabetics vs non diabetics and find its implications on the treatment of ocular diseases
Methods: 100 diabetics and 100 non diabetic patients were studied. Swab was taken from the lower fornix of left eye of each patient and sent for Gram staining and culture and sensitivity. The flora variability was evaluated between the two subsets of patients with regards to the type and sensitivity patterns of the organisms.
Results: Conjunctival flora was higher in number in diabetics compared to the non diabetic patients and there was significant difference in the organisms isolated and the sensitivity patterns. Gram negative organisms were more common among the diabetic patients.
Conclusion: The study showed significant difference in the microflora between the two subsets of patients with regards to both type and antibiotic sensitivity pattern, thus can help ophthalmologists in starting empirical treatment.
