Abstract
Purpose: To study the correlation between serum vitamin D level and tear film parameters in patients of dry eye disease (DED)
Methods: A total of 60 patients of DED were enrolled and underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation. Tear film parameters assessed were tear film break-up time (TFBUT), Schirmer test and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score. Serum vitamin D level was measured in all patients its correlation with tear film parameters was analyzed using Pearson coefficient correlation.
Results: Mean age of patients was 50.21 ± 19.56 years with 55% being females. The mean serum vitamin D level was 24.99±11.95 mg/dl. A positive correlation with TBUT and Schirmer readings (0.696 and 0.775 respectively) while negative correlation with OSDI (0.742) was found and this was significant for all with p value<0.0001
Conclusion: Decreased serum vitamin D level is found in DED and there exists a significant correlation of vitamin D with tear film parameters of secretion and stability.
