Abstract
DESIGN Cross-sectional study
PURPOSE To evaluate incidence of dry eye in rheumatoid arthritis and effect of Hydroxychloroquine drug therapy on retina
METHODS 75 patients underwent Schirmer I test, tear break-up time, rose bengal staining, fluorescein staining and OSDI scoring. Macula AS OCT scans were done to check HCQ toxicity
RESULTS Correlation between incidence of dry eye and Rheumatoid arthritis found, which was more in females. Incidence increased with disease duration. Strong correlation between RA factor and dry eye severity seen. OSDI was a reliable measure of dry eye symptoms. Reduction in CFT (248.95 µm ± 20.49) and parafoveal thinning on AS-OCT was seen
CONCLUSIONS Significant correlation between RA and dry eye severity is seen. Foveal and parafoveal thinning seen in these patients on AS-OCT. This could be an early sign of HCQ toxicity irrespective of the cumulative dose or treatment duration and before clinical symptoms or signs appear.
