Abstract
Study design: Case report
Purpose: Retinal astrocytic hamartomas are usually seen to be associated with phacomatosis.
Methods: A 28-year-old male presented to us with complaints of diminution of vision in both eyes which was gradual and progressive in nature. On examination, his best corrected visual acuity was hand movements close to the face in both eyes. On fundus examination, there was mild disc pallor in both eyes with bony spicules like black pigments dispersed mostly in the mid periphery. Also, there were small white punched-out defects visible in the fundus of both eyes. In the left eye, there was a mulberry-shaped calcified lesion present over the inferonasal part of the disc.
Result: Astrocytic hamartomas of the optic disc are seen to be associated with certain types of phacomatoses like tuberous sclerosis and neurofibromatosis.
Conclusion: We should be vigilant while examining such cases and appropriate investigations should be carried out for the benefit of patients.
