Abstract

INTRODUCTION:Ophthalmomyiasis externa is invasion of fly
larva(maggots) into living tissue inside orbit causing it’s destruction .This
is a case report of 70 year old severe diabetic female presenting with
painful black necrotic mass completely covering right orbit with foreign
body sensation, irritation, redness of eye .Obrital mass debrided, 80 live
larva mechanically extracted,cleaned with turpentine solution,dressed
with povidine iodine, topical analgesics, antibiotics,IV meropenam, strict
control of diabetes done. Evaluation under Slit lamp, indirect
ophthalmoscope, Bscan, CT were normal and MRI showed pseudo-orbital
cellulitis but no sign of mucormycosis. Entomological assessment
confirmed larva of house fly of the order Diptera and genus Musca.Orbital
cavity subsequently healed.CONCLUSION: .Urgent diagnosis and definitive
intervention is essential to prevent rapid invasion and destruction by
maggots in orbit
