Abstract

CASE REPORT
PURPOSE:To report a case of MRSA causing orbital cellulitis
METHOD:A 16 year old girl presented with RE swelling and pain after a blister in the right upper eyelid. History was taken, followed by an ocular and general examination. Patient advised to receive IV antibiotics after an incision and drainage procedure.
RESULTS:Reduced RE visual acuity noted on examination. Axial proptosis with exposure keratopathy, along with lid edema and ptosis noted. EOM were restricted. CT Orbit was suggestive of RE Orbital cellulitis with lid abscess. Following I & D, specimen was sent for microbiology evaluation. Patient received routine IV antibiotics, but with no clinical relief. Culture and sensitivity and Minimum inhibitory concentration reports yielded Methicillin Resistant S. aureus, which was resistant to the administered antibiotics. On receiving combined therapy with sensitive antibiotics (Vancomycin, Levofloxacin, Amikacin), patient improved clinically.
