Abstract

Background:A firm understanding of the management of an anophthalmic socket,its reconstruction principles,the possible complications,the requirement of a good fitting customized ocular prosthesis is a necessity to provide the best possible functional and cosmetic results.
Case Summary:A 27 year old male presented with an infected right eye socket.He had a history of right eye enucleation for Retinoblastoma at 3 years.A socket reconstruction with orbital implant was done at 14 years.Subsequent exposure was closed with a fixed prosthesis.An additional removable prosthesis was placed on top of this fixed prosthesis simulating a “double decker”.An initial surgery of prosthesis removal was done by cutting off its attachment to the underlying implant.The underlying implant probably a hydroxyapatite implant was removed piecemeal.A second socket reconstruction with an orbital implant with MMG and fornix forming sutures was done after 4 weeks.Prosthesis fitting was done after 10 weeks.
