Abstract
Study design: A hospital based cross sectional study.
Purpose: To determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of retinal degenerations in myopic adults in comparison to emmetropia.
Methods: A total of 250 eyes with myopia were recruited in case group and 100 eyes with emmetropia were taken as control group. All patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examination including dilated fundoscopy with scleral depression.
Results: Retinal changes were significantly(P<0.000) higher in myopia (46.4%) than in emmetropia (12%). Around 2.8% eyes with myopia had vision threatening lesions as compared to 2% in emmetropia (P=0.571).
Conclusion: Though posterior segment changes are more common in myopes, some of the vision threatening conditions like retinal hole and tear are not very rare in emmetropic individuals.
