Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: prospective randomized study
PURPOSE: IMPACT OF TORSIONAL AND LONGITUDINAL PHACOEMULSIFICATION ON THE INTEGRITY OF CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM
METHOD:A total of 100 eyes were included. Stop and chop technique using legion ozil technology phacomachine was performed .2 groups were distributed randomly, of which 50 eyes underwent torsional and 50 underwent longitudinal phacoemulsification. Preoperative and postoperative corneal endothelial count using specular microscopy was assessed.
RESULT: The torsional group had a lower mean U/S time (p<0.05), while the longitudinal group showed greater corneal endothelial cell losses at one week postoperatively (p > 0.05) as compared to the torsional phaco group.
CONCLUSION:The torsional phacoemulsification method proved to be safer in minimizing endothelial cell loss.
