Abstract
Purpose: To determine the pattern of investigation in uveitis patients being undertaken at first contact and to determine any additional financial burden to the patients
Methods: It was an observational study comprising of 201 uveitic patients. Consecutive patients diagnosed as uveitis presenting for the first time were included. The available record of investigations was reviewed and categorized into tailored or not tailored. An approximate amount spent on these investigations by the patient was obtained.
Results: 201 patients were recruited for the study. Most common investigations advised were CBC (90.1%), Chest X-ray (82.1%), Mantoux test(77.6%) and ESR(73.6%). The investigations were not tailored as per the history and examinations in 57.2% of cases. Median cost of not tailored investigations was INR 1500,whereas for tailored investigations it was INR 500.
Conclusion: A significant number of investigations performed at first contact were found be contrary to standard guidelines.
