Abstract
Phacoemulsification using conventional techniques can be difficult in hard and leathery nuclei, especially in the setting of zonular weakness. The main challenges are the failure to attain complete fragmentation of the nucleus due to firm posterior leathery bridging strandS and chopper induced damage to posterior capsule.Attempts of forceful separation can lead to zonular dialysis(ZD). Here we describe a novel surgical technique of nucleus disassembly of leathery hard cataracts. Circumferential peripheral chops are performed to seperate endonucleus. The epinuclear shell remains like petals of a flower attatched at the center. the petals are pulled towards the section, peeled and emulsified to create a clear area. The nucleus is then rotated to bring this area sub incisionally. blunt tipped spatula is used to lift up the posterior plate, which is then sculpted. The remaining epinucleus can then be easily removed.
