Abstract
To determine the effect of amniotic membrane grafting in patients with corneal thinning and corneal epithelial defects and to compare the efficacy between inlay and overlay techniques.
Method: 52 patients (60 eye) underwent amniotic membrane grafting for corneal epithelial defect. Amniotic membrane was placed on the surface of the cornea in overlay(group A) or inlay(group B) fashion.
Results: Among the 44 eyes treated with an overlay AMG (group A), the corneal epithelial defect healed after the first AMG in 28 eyes within an average of 24.5 days. Among the 16 eyes treated with an inlay AMG (group B), the corneal epithelial defect healed within an average of 27.4 days after AMT. The corneal epithelial defect healed after the first amniotic membrane grafting in 14 eyes and recurred in 4 of 14 eyes.
Conclusions: The AMG is useful in cases of corneal epithelial defect. However, we did not find any difference between overlay and inlay techniques in terms of healing time and recurrence rate.
