Abstract

Purpose: To estimate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) in SLE and RA and to identify any association with anti-SS-A and SS-B autoantibodies. Study design: The clinical descriptive study included 90 RA and 55 SLE patients, ≥18 years. Methods: DED evaluation included OSDI and SPEED questionnaire, TBUT, OSS, and NEI scoring, and Schirmer`s test. Anti-SS-A and SS-B autoantibody levels were assessed using ELISA. Results: The DED prevalence in SLE was 25.5% (by OSDI), 29.1% (by SPEED), 25.5% (by Schirmer’s test I), 65.5% (by TBUT), and 58.2% (by OSS/NEI). The DED prevalence in RA was 28.2% (by OSDI), 57.8% (by SPEED), 33.3% (by Schirmer’s test I),74.4% (by TBUT), and 68.9% (by OSS/NEI). There was no significant association of dry eye with autoantibodies. Conclusion: Most RA and SLE patients had DED on objective tests, indicating future progression to symptomatic DED. Also, the prevalence of DED exceeds SS-A/SS-B positivity, indicating other factors in pathology.
