Abstract
Purpose : To compare the efficacy of basic treatment modalities of Meibomian gland dysfunction[MGD].
Study design: Prospective cohort study
Methods: We have 120 patients with MGD. They were divided into 2 groups of 60 each. Warm compresses and lid hygiene along with supplementation of lubricants was the treatment for the first group [Group A] . For the second group [Group B] , topical antibiotics were also prescribed along with lid hygiene and lubricants. Parameters : symptoms, Tear film assessment, ocular surface staining and eyelid morphology.
Results: Symptoms were reduced in about 40% in Group A & 90% in Group B. Eyelid morphology improvement was seen in 32% of Group A & 82% of Group B. On Ocular surface staining, improvement in Group A and B are 28% & 76% respectively. On tear film assessment, improvement in Group A & B are 68% and 76% respectively.
Conclusion: Better improvement was observed in patients with topical antibiotic usage along with lid hygiene and lubricants.
