Abstract
Study design- prospective interventional study Aim- to study effectiveness of clear lens extraction as primary therapy vs. laser iridotomy in cases of acute angle closure. Method- 20 patients diagnosed with acute angle closure underwent complete ophthalmological examination and were assigned to either undergo clear lens extraction or laser iridotomy treatment. Patients aged 50 years or older, with acute angle closure in phakic eye were included and followed up at post-op, 1st, 3rd week,1st month, 2nd month, 3rd month. Results- prevalence of raised intraocular pressure in the clear lens extraction group in the follow up months were lower when compared to the peripheral laser iridotomy group. Conclusion- early clear lens extraction appeared to be more effective in preventing IOP spikes than peripheral laser iridotomy after acute angle closure attack. Clear lens extraction showed greater efficacy, was more cost effective and should be considered as an option for first line treatment
