Abstract
Purpose – To find the role of phacoemulsification as a treatment modality in angle closure glaucoma.
Methods– 30 eyes of 30 patients of primary angle closure glaucoma, underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation as initial treatment. The clinical outcomes were determined in terms of intraocular pressure control, vision improvement, need for antiglaucoma medications, gonioscopy grading and changes in anterior chamber depth.
Results – Among the subjects studied, mean pre-operative intraocular pressure was reduced 6 months after the operation.
Visual acuity increased from pre-operative vision which was statistically significant. Mean number of antiglaucoma medications required decreased. Mean anterior chamber depth increased. Mean Schaffer gonioscopy grading increased.
Conclusions – Primary phacoemulsification is a safe and effective method and can be considered a first line treatment option in managing acute primary angle closure patients.
