Abstract
STUDY DESIGN- A tertiary care based prospective interventional study which included patients of chronic nasolacrimal duct obstruction without any previous surgical intervention for the same.
PURPOSE- To compare surgical success of external DCR with stent versus external DCR without stent 6 months post surgery.
METHOD- 26 patients were included in the study, divided into two groups – Group A patients who underwent external DCR with silicon stent and Group B patients who underwent external DCR with out stent. Both the groups were followed up monthly up to a period of six months to look for patency of the ostium created.
RESULTS- Out of 18 patients in group A, 16 had patent DCR ostium i.e success rate was 88.88% while in group B, 14 out of 18 patients had a patent DCR ostium i.e 77.77%. This difference was statistically significant.
CONCLUSION- External DCR performed with a silicon stent has higher success rate as compared to external DCR alone with out stent.
