Abstract

PURPOSE OF STUDY: To study the ocular manifestations of anemia. In iron deficiency anemia, due to hypoxia there will be venous stasis, angiospasm and raised capillary permeability, leading to retinal damage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS : This is a prospective cross sectional study done on 85 patients with anemia. Informed consent was obtained from all the patients. Patients with diabetes, hypertension, history of ocular trauma and any systemic disorder leading to retinopathy were excluded from the study.
RESULTS: In the present study, conjunctival pallor was the commonest ocular manifestation of anemia seen in 66 out of 85 cases (77%). Retinal hemorrhages were the second commonest ocular manifestation seen in 16 out of 85 cases (18%). Posterior pole pallor was seen as the third commonest ocular manifestation seen in 10 patients out of 85 cases (11%).
CONCLUSION : Early diagnosis of anemic retinopathy helps in the early treatment of anemia and thus resolution of retinal hemorrhages.
