Abstract
Low postnatal IGF-1 & postnatal growth failure (PNGF) are associated with ROP. Similar studies in Indian cohort are limited. This prospective study was conducted to determine role of IGF-1 & PNGF in predicting ROP in babies <1500 grams in a south Indian cohort. 329 preterm neonates were screened for ROP. Weekly serial birth weight estimated & growth monitored using growth charts. Blood sample for IGF-1 was collected between 30-33 weeks. Gestational age(p<0.001), birth weight(p<0.001), low APGAR score(p=0.008), duration of oxygen supplementation(p=0.002), low weight gain per week(p<0.001), PNGF(p=0.004) & low IGF-1 (p=0.002) were associated with ROP. AUC of ROC for IGF-1 levels and postnatal weight gain were >0.5- good diagnostic accuracy in predicting ROP. The current study results show that low IGF-1 and PNGF are additional important risk factors for ROP development. This study is the first in an Indian cohort to estimate serum IGF-1 levels in preterm babies to establish ROP risk.
