Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the spectrum of ocular injuries, clinical and demographic profile and management patterns following firecracker injury in patients attending tertiary care centre.
Methods: A hospital-based, retrospective study of 25 patients (18M,7F) of mean age 19.5years±9.1,who sustained ocular injuries following firecracker injury visiting emergency department. Detailed ophthalmic examination like BCVA, anterior segment evaluation and fundus examination was done in cases possible. B-scan and X-Ray orbit were done in cases required. Patients were advised admission and managed either conservatively or surgically. Results: The spectrum of ocular involvement included periocular burns in 100% cases, corneal abrasion in 72%, corneal perforation, hyphema in 18%, laceration and globe rupture in 12%. Poor visual outcomes seen in 10% cases.
Conclusion: Enforcement of legislations, health education and public awareness are essential in preventing this hazard to ocular health in country.
