Abstract
Method
Samples were collected from vitreous & serum from 40 patients and analyzed for VEGF-A, TNF-1α, Glutamate, Renin, and Angiotensin-II. Objective was to correlate systemic indicator of diabetes control with serum and vitreous biomarkers and compare levels in Type I &II DM to contrast DR pathogenic pathways.
Result
Mean serum and vitreous biomarkers were elevated in both Type I & II DM patients. In Type I DM both serum and vitreous VEGF correlated well with HbA1c, FBS, PPBS and Haemoglobin. In Type II DM patients, the serum VEGF correlated well with Hb levels, serum Glutamate and Angiotensin correlated with HbA1c, FBS and PPBS and serum TNF-1α with all the blood parameters assesed, vitreous levels of these biomarkers did not show significant correlation with blood parameters. Serum levels of Renin, Angiotensin and TNF-1α were found to be elevated in patients of Type II DM than in Type I DM. However, vitreous levels of only VEGF were significantly elevated in patients with Type I DM
