Abstract
Purpose: To report the epidemiology, etiology and spectrum of clinical features of paediatric patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment presenting to a tertiary care centre in north India
Design: Ambispective case series
Sample size- 348 eyes
Results: Demographic data revealed that 75.9% (264) patients were male, and 24.1% (84) were female. The mean age at presentation was 12.72 ± 3.627 years. Bilateral detachment was seen in 30 eyes of 15 patients (8.7%). The mean duration between onset of symptoms and presentation was 89.71 ± 151.89 days. 261 eyes (75%) had macula off retinal detachment. The most common type of break noted was horseshoe tear in 20.7%. PVR grade C3 and above was noted in 54 eyes (15.5%). 156 eyes (44.8%) had retinal detachment secondary to trauma, of which 122 (78.2%) was due to closed globe injury. High myopia was the causative factor in 59 eyes (17%). Other causes included coloboma and intraocular surgery.
