Abstract
Study design-Randomised control study
Phacoemulsification negatively impacts the corneal endothelium due to the energy dissipated by the phacoemulsification probe, irrigating pressure and IOP spikes and the post phacoemulsification endothelial loss was found to be around 10 to 14.1%
To evaluate the deleterious role of postoperative IOP spikes on the corneal endothelium and corneal clarity,we had divided the study population into 2 groups after uneventful cataract surgery-test group and control group, the test group had received topical timololBD in addition to routine care of management.
When the patients came for serial follow-up [POD1-2,PO1-2 weeks,PO1-2 months]their specular microscopy was done along with routine evaluation and compared to the preoperative values
Results-In the control group there was an average loss of endothelial count of 10.9% where as in the test group the average endothelial loss was 5.56% which though lower in the test group was not statistically significant.
