Abstract
Study design: Cross sectional
Purpose: Evaluate clinical presentations and visual outcome (VA) of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON)
Method: Clinical profile, ocular and cranial injuries of 26 patients of TON were recorded over 6 months. Visual outcomes of patients treated according to ONTT and untreated patients were analysed. BCVA at 1 month follow up was taken as the primary outcome measure. Analysis was done using statistical tests.
Results: 5 patients presented with vision > 6/60 and 21 patients < 6/60. 20 patients received i.v. and oral steroids. Of them > 2 line improvement in BCVA was seen in 12 patients. Final vision > 6/60 was recorded in 15 patients. 13 patients had final vision < 6/60. Significant difference between baseline and post treatment VA after 1 month was seen in patients who received steroids.
Conclusion: Regimen as proposed by ONTT is safe and effective in managing TON within 3 days of onset of defective vision following trauma.
