Abstract
Study design: Prospective study.
Purpose: In large eyelid malignancies reconstruction after excision can be difficult. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) may be useful for tumor debulking. Conventionally, response to NACT is assessed using the RECIST criteria. We devised an ease of assessment score to evaluate the change in the difficulty level of the surgical reconstruction following NACT and evaluated it in eyelid sebaceous cell carcinoma (SGC)
Methods: 10 cases of SGC with stage T2bN0 or greater and M0 were recruited. Pre and post NACT scores were compared to assess the improvement in the ease of surgery.
Results: There was downstaging of tumor in 5/10 cases. The mean percentage reduction in tumor dimensions was 62.67% (range 36.84-100%) and volume was 66.10% (range 11.76-91%). The mean ease of surgery score reduced by 3 (19.35%) to12.5. The ease of surgery category improved in 4/10 cases.
Conclusion: The improvement in ease of surgery score correlated with the tumor downstaging.
