Abstract
Aim-To analyze the change in corneal keratometry and astigmatism after pterygium excision using glue and sutures.Method-Case records of 193 patients with significant pterygium: Grade1-21, grade 2 -133 and grade3- 40 eyes, were analyzed for keratometry readings pre and post pterygium excision. Glue was used in 85 and sutures in 98 patients. 116 underwent small incision cataract surgery and 77 underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Results-Mean astigmatism pre pterygium was <1D in 47, 1-2D in 53 and >2 D in 93 eyes and post pterygium <1D in 94, 1-2 D in 32 &>2 D in 67 eyes. Mean uncorrected visual acuity of majority (60%) was <6/60 before pterygium surgery and it improved after cataract surgery with 66% seeing 6/12 or better.Conclusion-Pterygium excision significantly decreases the amount of astigmatism .However, the outcome in advanced pterygium is questionable due to inherent corneal scarring.Excision of pterygium augmented with Toric IOLs can provide superior visual outcome
