Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case series. PURPOSE: To present a diverse spectrum of pathologies arising from the caruncle. METHODS: 33 patients who underwent biopsy were included.RESULTS: Mean age at presentation was 54.7 + 21(21-77) y, with 19 males(57.57%) and unilateral involvement in 31(93.9%). Presentation was medial canthal mass in 32(96%) and epiphora in 12(36%).Histopathology revealed nevus(3), sebaceous gland hyperplasia(4), sebaceous adenoma(3), sebaceous gland carcinoma(2),squamous cell carcinoma(2), oncocytoma(2), complex choristoma(2), BRLH(4)(both bilateral, lymphoma(4), papilloma(3) among others. Complete regression with primary complete excision and excision base cryotherapy in 31,1 BRLH recurred, regressed with cryotherapy&1 papilloma recurred, regressed with re-excision at a mean follow up of 23.18 months.CONCLUSION:Carunclar lesions are uncommon mandating a comprehensive clinical evaluation and histopathology guided treatment for desirable outcome
