Abstract
Study design: Prospective interventional randomised controlled trial
Purpose: Compare the efficacy of topical & intracameral mydriatics in pupil dilatation for cataract surgery
Methods: This study included 140 subjects, with uncomplicated cataract, planned for SICS with PCIOL implantation. The cases were randomized into 2 groups (70 each): GroupA (topical) & GroupB (intracameral). Pupil size was compared at different time points during the surgery & mean duration of surgery was noted
Results: Mean pupil dilation was larger in GroupA, prior to peribulbar block & prior to patient lying on the OT table. But the mean pupil size was larger in GroupB, 1 minute after entering AC, after extracting nucleus from AC, prior IOL implantation, prior removal of lid speculum
Conclusion: Intracameral mydriatics can be an effective alternative to topical drugs. The stable mydriasis induced by this drug combination improved the intraoperative conditions in crucial steps during cataract surgery.
