Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare serum testosterone levels in patients of acute, chronic and recurrent Central Serous Chorioretinopathy versus age and sex matched healthy controls.
Methods: The present hospital based, prospective, cross- sectional, case- control observational study was conducted on 110 eyes of 103 cases of CSC with acute, chronic or recurrent presentations. Their serum testosterone was estimated by radioimmunoassay and compared with that of 103 age and gender matched controls.
Results: The mean level of serum Testosterone is lower in male patients of CSC and the difference is highly significant (p =0.001). We observed that a significantly higher number of cases had testosterone towards the lower side of normal range as compared to male controls with p- value of 0.002. The odds of CSC with testosterone in the range 0-2.9 ng/ml are 3.28.
Conclusion: Low serum testosterone level is definitely a risk- factor for CSC in males.
