Abstract
Cross-sectional analytical study.Purpose:To compare IOP,RNFL,visual field, ocular perfusion pressure, ophthalmic artery flow (OAF) velocity among hypertensives and normotensives.Methods:114 patients with hypertension (HT) on anti-hypertensive therapy for >1 yr and 114 normotensives (NT) were evaluated for BP, IOP by GAT, OAF velocity by color doppler imaging, RNFL(SD-OCT) & visual fields(HFA).Results:Median duration of HT was 13 yrs.The average & sectoral RNFL thickness and average & sectoral macular GC thickness were significantly lower in HT. EDV was significantly lower & PI, RI, and CIMT were significantly higher in HT. In HT>5 years, macular GCC was significantly lower than HT<5 yrs. Conclusion: Patients with hypertension are at risk of peripapillary RNFL and macular GCC loss. As noted by the reduced end diastolic flow of the ophthalmic artery, reduced diastolic flow may be a possible causative mechanism.
