  5. FP0032 : Minimally invasive strabismus surgery versus conventional approach for inferior oblique recession

Abstract

Study Design: Randomized comparative parallel design study
Purpose: Minimally invasive strabismus surgery (MISS) has been found to yield better cosmesis after surgery for horizontal recti. Due to lack of studies comparing MISS for inferior oblique with conventional techniques, we did this study to compare the former with the latter.
Methods: 40 patients with inferior oblique overaction (IOOA) were divided into 2 groups – recession by MISS & conventionally. All surgeries were done by same surgeon. Conjunctival injection, chemosis, lid edema, and residual IOOA during first 6 postoperative weeks were recorded.
Results: Congestion (p<0.05), edema (p<0.01) & chemosis (p<0.001) were significantly less in MISS group on postoperative day 1. There was significantly less chemosis on postoperative day 7 too (p=0.035). No difference was found for residual IOOA.
Conclusion: Our study showed MISS is superior in early postoperative period, due to less conjunctival and periorbital swelling.
