Abstract
Purpose: Comparison of microbiological analysis and outcomes in various types of scleral buckles. Study Design and Methods: A retrospective review of records was done over seven years (2013-2019). Patients diagnosed with scleral buckle infection post-retinal detachment surgery referred from elsewhere were included in the study. Results- 54 eyes of 53 patients were included in the study and divided into two groups: Group A – tire explant (34 eyes) and Group B- encircling explant (20 eyes). Overall, Male predominance (73.5%) was noted with a mean age of presentation – 45.72 ± 21.7 years and good final visual acuity (LogMAR<2) with attached retina (68.5%), which was comparable in both the groups. Gram-positive cocci (45%) were the most common isolates, with staphylococcus aureus being the most common pathogen (25%), with no significant difference in the two groups. Conclusion: No significant difference was noted in the outcomes of the two groups with comparable microbiological analysis.
