Abstract
Increased IOP is a known risk factor for glaucoma while hepatic steatosis predisposes patients to various systemic conditions. This study aims to correlate between these two conditions.
AIM: To assess the association between change in IOP and etiology/severity of fatty liver disease
METHODS: A cross sectional prospective study was conducted over 3months with 403 USG diagnosed fatty liver disease patients.Goldmann Applanation tonometry was done to measure IOP and statistical analysis was done.
RESULT:Among 403 patients,Grade 1 hepatic steatosis(197) had mean IOP of 15.5mm Hg, grade 2(113) and Grade 3(93) had mean IOP of 16.4mm Hg and 16.6mm Hg respectively. The mean IOP in patients with NAFLD, ALD and fatty liver due to infective etiology were 16.3mm Hg, 16.2mm Hg and 16mm Hg respectively.
CONCLUSION: Fatty liver is postulated to be an independent risk factor for rise in IOP. With increasing severity, IOP rises.Though etiology of the disease has been found to be of minimal significance.
