Abstract
Purpose-
This study determines the effectiveness of phacoemulsification along with a disposable 25-gauge hypodermic needle for an ab interno goniectomy (BANG) in cases of primary open angle glaucoma.
Methods-
20 patients with early to moderate POAG had 22 of their eyes included in this interventional case study. BANG combined with phacoemulsification were performed on all eyes. Data on demographics, intraocular pressure, and number of anti-glaucoma drugs were recorded at baseline, one day and three months following surgery. Pre- and post-operative data were compared using the student paired t-test. P-values <0.05 were regarded as statistically significant.
Results-
At postoperative month three, the mean IOP was 15.2 mmHg on 0.55 topical glaucoma medications. A >20% reduction in IOP was achieved in 75 % patients.
Conclusion-
Combined phacoemulsification and BANG as a procedure for POAG is a low cost MIGS technique which is as effective as other expensive alternatives.
